ROOKIES TO MEET ON JANUARY 30

We have four quick questions for you:

  1. Are you between being new and being a veteran?

  2. Do you have less than 3 years experience as a REALTOR®?

  3. Would you like to increase your knowledge and network with other Rookie REALTORS®?

  4. Would you like to have fun while you learn and explore your profession?
One short answer:

If  YES, join the Rookies for their first meeting on Wednesday, January 30 at 1 p.m.
at the SCAOR office.

THE RESULTS ARE IN:
MEMBERS SUPPORT EXPANSION!
On January 10, 2008, over 280 members attended the General Membership Meeting held at the Cheer Center in Georgetown. SCAOR membership overwhelmingly voted in favor of the proposed capital expenditure for the addition, construction, and remodeling of existing SCAOR offices at Park Avenue. Additionally, SCAOR members voted to table the discussion on the proposed amendments to the SCAOR by-laws until the
by-laws Committee completes and recommends additional modifications. Thank you to all for your participation and comments during our meeting.

Public Awareness
Bill Lucks, President of SCAOR, announced the continuation of a Presidential Advisory Group on Public Awareness for 2008. Rob Harman, Past President; Sandy Hughes; and Nick Carter will join the 2007 PAG on Public Awareness to complete a comprehensive plan for REALTORS®.

For Your Eyes Only!
In the near future, SCAOR members will be able to access members only information through At A Glance. We want to keep you informed on the latest developments. Special initiatives and information will be accessible for your perusal. You will use your NRDS number to access this special content.

During this very busy continuing education period, please do the following to ensure your class choices are obtained:

  • If at all possible, sign up online through www.thescaorstore.com. Once your order is submitted, you are guaranteed a space in your class.

  • When signing up online, if you are registering more than one person, or registering someone else, note in the comments section who is attending the class.

  • Faxing a class registration does not ensure a class will be available.

  • Credits must be completed by April 30, 2008.

  • January and February classes are $5 cheaper, and you can beat the rush!

  • Please note the location of your class(es). Most are held at the SCAOR, but other locations include the CHEER center or Administrative building on the Circle.

What is CAN-SPAM?

Is it something to eat? Oh, I know, it's my Trash folder in my email. Well, no, actually, it's not either one of these, but it is something we, as REALTORS®, need to know about.

ETHICALLY SPEAKING...

Below is the Hearing Panel's decision from the case interpretation presented in last week's At A Glance.

Case #4-4: Responsibility for Subordinates
(Revised Case #13-6 May, 1988. Transferred to Article 4 November, 1994. Revised November, 2001.)

The panel found that REALTOR-ASSOCIATE® B should have made his relationship to the buyer, his mother, unmistakably clear to the seller. He should have disclosed in writing that the buyer was his mother so there would have been no misunderstanding.

The Hearing Panel found REALTOR-ASSOCIATE® B in violation of Article 4.

The Hearing Panel noted that REALTORS® are not presumed to be in violation of the Code of Ethics in cases where REALTORS® or REALTOR-ASSOCIATES® associated with them are found in violation. Rather, their culpability, if any, must be determined from the facts and circumstances of the case in question. It was the conclusion of the Hearing Panel that REALTOR® A had made reasonable efforts to ensure that REALTOR-ASSOCIATE® B was familiar with the Code and its obligations, and that it would have been unreasonable to expect REALTOR® A to have known the purchaser was REALTOR-ASSOCIATE® B's mother. Consequently, REALTOR® A was found not to have violated Article 4.

POLITE: IT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO

If you are utilizing the police icon on the MLS to send an email to a fellow REALTOR®, please remember the Golden Rule. Treat others as you wish to be treated. A friendly email asking if something is incorrect is better than a "flaming" email in ALL CAPS!!!, which is considered rude and offensive. Although the sender is anonymous, this does not remove common courtesy as an expected behavior. SCAOR staff is always happy to answer questions about MLS entries, possible errors or omissions. Contact Kristi or TracyLee at 302-855-2300 to clarify before entering, and avoid a compliance email completely.
