REALTOR® Safety Week . . . A message from NAR President Dick Gaylord:

"Every week REALTORS® put themselves at risk by welcoming complete strangers into a home or getting into a car along with someone they just met. These everyday occurrences have the potential to turn into a personal nightmare, if our members don't understand and follow the basic tenets of personal, professional, and client safety."

This week, September 14 - 20, marks the sixth annual REALTOR® Safety Week. Please use resources available at www.REALTOR.org/Safety to stay safe every day of the year.

REALTOR® SAFETY TIPS:

  1. Always make sure someone knows where you are going and who you plan to meet there - including the client's name and phone number.
  2. Always schedule first meetings with new clients in the office, verify their identify, and introduce them to a colleague.
  3. Always keep a charged mobile phone with you, whether you're in the office, on the road, or at property showings.

Taxes The Rookie Committee invites you to a FREE program to learn about 1031 exchanges next Wednesday, September 24, from 1 to 2 p.m.

Heidi Balliet from Tunnell-Raysor and Rick Tull, CPA will explain everything you always wanted to know about this interesting topic. Come out and join the Rookies as you become more educated in our multi-faceted real estate industry to better serve your customers.

Free, but please register!

TELEPHONE TIPS

REALTORS® spend hours on the phone. Here are some ways to maximize your productivity while reducing telephone time wasters.

  • Have someone screen calls
  • Work solely through voicemail/email
  • Leave and request detailed messages
  • Schedule and communicate a "best time to receive calls"

Additionally, to wrap up those too long calls politely, try this:

  • Summarize
  • Use a timer
  • "I know you're very busy, so I'll just. . ."
  • "How can I help you?"
  • Schedule calls for a block of time
  • Set a time limit
    1. "I was just on my way out. . ."
    2. "I have a meeting in 5 minutes. . ."
    3. "Well, before we hang up, I just want to. . ."

SCAOR PHONES STILL SOMEWHAT DOWN FOR INSTALLATION

The new phone system was installed at SCAOR this Thursday, September 18. Thank you for your understanding as we have phone service again, but it is intermittent. This morning we were able to receive phone calls, but not dial out. If you have a need to contact SCAOR and cannot reach us by phone, please email info@scaor.com and we will reply via email. Thank you for your patience as we move forward on our construction.

This week's topic is about FAIR HOUSING & ADVERTISING.

Having just taught Fair Housing to the current Broker's class, I realized it would be of good benefit for all to review the guidance that HUD has provided for advertising and staying in compliance with the Fair Housing Act.

Get some straight facts on Fair Housing and Advertising - an important subject that we all need to be experts on >>

POLICE ICON

The police icon was introduced two years ago as a tool for REALTORS® to communicate with one another about MLS listing content and provided an anonymous entry. As you may recall, we have posted several comments about the content and tone of messages used in the police icon response.

As of October 1, 2008, the police icon will no longer be undercover, but will include the identity of the sender. So, please continue to assist in identifying your concerns with a listing; however, your fellow REALTORS® will know the source and be encouraged to communicate directly. For serious alleged violations of the MLS, please contact the SCAOR office to file a formal complaint.
