No matter where I go or what course I take, social media is a topic of conversation. Twitter, Facebook, Linked In, Active Rain, Trulia, Oodle, and the lists go on. I believe that social media is playing a role today in the marketing of real estate and in the creation of new business for REALTORS^®.

What do you hope to accomplish by getting involved in social media? You likely want to be considered the "go-to" expert on local real estate. And how do you accomplish that? You start with perhaps just one of the social media sites mentioned above. The experts on social media say that you should "talk" on your social media site every day. Why not be social one day, but the next, make a short statement on the current market or a new property that you just listed? Make it interesting so everyone will begin to look forward to your comments.

Now comes the Blogging! There are many sites on which you can set up a Blog for free. When you "talk" on your social media site, mention your Blog. A Blog can be a part of your website or it can stand by itself and link to it. Search engines like regular, fresh content. Web surfers are always looking for information, so make your Blog posts short, but informative, helpful, and friendly. There is usually a Comment section on a Blog so visitors can begin to interact with you and other visitors who have made comments.

Blogs work well because they bring new business to you, instead of you going after them. The more posts you make to your Blog, the more prospects will learn about you. Some prospects will pose a question to you, and it becomes your next post. Some consumers say they prefer a Blog to a website because it gives a chance for interaction.

Give good information, keep it short, be respectful, and they will come!
