Legislative Issues Watchdog
Special Update from Capitol Hill -- March 30, 2007
This week Congress debated three issues with enormous implications for the real estate industry:
NAR has been actively involved in the debate on each of these issues to protect the interests of our members. Three articles from Congressional Quarterly Today are attached that summarize the hearings and will give you insights on what is happening in Washington that you may want to share with others in your office and in our real estate industry. We are in the midst of a legislative session and that means a flurry of activity is affecting Sussex County! SCAOR members are encouraged to attend important meetings that impact our market and property owners. ELECTRIC AND ENERGY: Monday, March 12, 2007: Public Service Commission Hearing at DTCC Campus, Georgetown in the Theatre. 7pm meeting on Energy in Sussex County. Property owners located near Indian River Power Plant should pay particular attention to this issue. ROADS AND TRANSPORTATION: Monday, March 12, 2007: DelDot Public Workshop on 113 North/South Study at East Millsboro Elementary School on Iron Branch Road in Millsboro. Meeting is from 4-7pm. This is the controversial by-pass which has 2 new options. Thursday, March 15, 2007: DelDot Public Workshop on 113 North/South Study at the Cheer Center in Georgetown from 4-7pm. This is the same meeting as Monday night in Millsboro. DNREC AND SRA: Last week a Chancery Court judge denied the State of Delaware's motion to dismiss the SRA/NRA lawsuit. This means the case will continue to go forward. Many Delawareans are supporting this lawsuit to overturn the SRA and NRA maps that were recently adopted by DNREC. The issue: should DNREC be allowed to put private property on a map, and then tell the counties they are required to enact development restrictions, without due process and proper notification to landowners? Many property owners will be impacted in many ways. We urge you, our members, to review this issue and to contact the Positive Growth Alliance to demonstrate how you can support the lawsuit. PGA may be reached at 302-644-3579.
